Belgium’s Tsar B reaches dizzying new heights of accomplished cool with new single ‘Golddigger’. Inspired by the girl power pop movement of the late ‘90s/early ‘00s, Tsar B takes note from globally known artists for this alternative anthem to independence. Although sounds inspired by Middle Eastern music are no stranger to the artist, there’s an even more distorted effect on these winding electronics, and with Britney Spears in mind, you can almost hear ‘Toxic’. Again, R&B is the track’s centre piece and who better to follow the example of than Beyoncé, although it’s arguably the later Lemonade-era tracks we’re being lead towards here rather than her noughties material. Despite these incredibly popular influences, it’s obvious that Tsar B is no copycat. ‘Golddigger’ is entirely her own with those teasing, smokey vocals, industrial drums, chunky R&B melodies and self-production all credited to this modern femme fatale. - HT
